From Raw Material to Masterpiece: How its Made!

Wood Lathing each bowl into the masterpiece that it is!

Wood from a forest or backyard, with a history and heart. Salvaged, cherished, and turned into a one-of-a-kind bowl that tells its own story.

Step 1: Selecting the Wood / Sourcing the Wood

  • Choose a suitable type of wood:

    • Hardwoods like maple, cherry, walnut (durable, beautiful grain)

    • Softwoods like pine or cedar (easier to turn, lighter)

  • Check for knots, cracks, and defects

    • Avoid splits that could break while turning

  • Cut the wood to rough blank dimensions (slightly larger than intended final piece)

Step 2: Preparing the Blank

  • Rough shaping:

    • Cut the wood into a cylinder or roughly round shape if making bowls

    • Make it balanced so it doesn’t wobble on the lathe

  • Drill a mounting hole if needed (for chucking)

Step 3: Mounting the Blank on the Lathe

  • Use one of these methods:

    • Faceplate → screws wood to a flat plate on the lathe (common for bowls)

    • Chuck → jaws grip the wood for removable and precise turning

    • Between centers → spigot or drive center + tailstock for spindle work

  • Ensure the wood is securely fastened to avoid accidents

Step 4: Rough Turning

  • Turn on the lathe at a moderate speed

  • Shape the blank into a cylindrical form

    • Remove bark, uneven edges, or flat spots

  • Constantly check balance and stability

  • Use tool rest properly for safe leverage

Step 5: Shaping the Outside

  • Use gouges and scrapers to refine the exterior shape

    • Bowls: gently curve to the final outer profile

    • Spindles: taper, bead, or detail as needed

  • Sand lightly if desired at this stage for smoother workflow
